The idea of refrigeration has been around since the mid 1700’s. However, what we all have in our kitchens and call “the Fridge” has only been around for about the last 100 years. Popularized in homes during the 1920’s by Frigidaire, the refrigerator has become a mainstay in modern homes. Throughout the years the tech behind the fridge has changed drastically. Some old refrigerators from the mid 1800’s was nothing more than a wooden box, a water-cooled compressor and a measly substitute from an ice maker called an ice tray. Other models were lined with a porcelain outer covering.
Leaping past the 1960’s and 70’s when you could get a fridge in a plethora of colors like petal pink, or avocado green the 1980’s and 90’s brought us the typical colorings of black, white, and stainless steel. Now though you can get a fridge with all kinds of bells and whistles such as in-door icemakers, wifi technology, and touchscreen displays. Even the door options have improved over the years to have choices like freezer on the bottom, side by side, French door with bottom freezer, and 4 door French door.
However, it’s tough to know which model or brand to go with especially since some major manufacturers currently make junk refrigerators. One example is LG. They are making specific models where the compressor is failing within the first few years and then it becomes a battle of attrition to get them to properly fix what is “supposed” to be covered under warranty. Samsung hasn’t fared much better when they came up with the idiotic idea of putting the ice maker on the fresh food side and not the freezer side or on some models putting an ice maker that constantly freezes up and requires a new one or for the ice maker to be disabled altogether.
TekEons has compared and reviewed many models so that you can make an informed buying decision. Granted we haven’t reviewed every model from every brand so we would like your input. If you would like to share your experience with a certain brand or model, whether good or bad, just fill out the form at the bottom of the page.
